Hi all,
If you've ever wanted to adopt a very cute and sweet dog- here's your chance! Her name is Abby and she's a 5-6 year old German Shepherd mix, but extremely good-natured and all around awesome. I found her almost 8 months ago pregnant and with heart worms on a highway near the animal sanctuary where I work. She had her puppies, they've all been adopted out, her heart worms have been treated, and now she just needs a home- desperately.
I thought that in 8 months time I would've found her a place, but no such luck. I'm in the middle of moving and can't take her with me (it was very spur of the moment- roommate left without much notice). Even if you can't adopt this wonderful dog, perhaps you might know someone who can foster her? She's listed on Petfinder if you need more info- http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=7269264.
Thanks!
-Carolyn

If so, I have a favor to ask, but it's top secret right now so I can't spill the beans. It won't take but 5 minutes and it would mean the world to me! If yer planning to go, lemme know!!!!!!

Life! Argh! But Yay too!
Work is always this strange dichotomy of me just rockin' it and then me not rockin' it. So, I'm working to rock it while keeping a Maui attitude. Because, if you did not know already, I went to Hawaii for my paid vacation. It's still such a strange concept that I get paid vacation time. Anyhow, Ms. Jamie London and I met up with Ms. Karen Encarnacion and had a ab fab time. I even tried to learn how to surf- ahahaha. Lots of hiking up to waterfalls and springs, eating wild bananas, liloquoi (passionfruit) and guava, watching sunrises and sunsets on the beach and mountains, napping near the ocean waves- perfect.
Personally, I've met someone, but I live in the middle of nowhere so it poses an interesting, yet annoying situation especially when this boy lives back on the east coast.
Roommate is leaving me, so I need to find a new place to live. Hoping for a place in Chico. We'll see what happens. I have a month to get my shit together.
School's good. I'll have my Master's in less than a year!

Orland is quite different from anything I've ever experienced. Here are a few recent developments I'd like to actually remember. Knowing my brain, I won't be able to recall these memories 3 years from now so I'm going to type them up here...
1. Orland smells like an armpit 2 out of the 7 days of the week 2. Mr. "I'm so tan" at the gym grunts way too much for a man who lifts significantly less than me 3. It's Friday at 4pm and both the local thrift store and library are closed. 4. The library still works on a card catalog system 5. The one cute boy in town around my age is probably married, otherwise Jamie and I wonder what keeps him in this town. 6. I think everyone carries the assumption that my roommate and i are lesbian lovers, which we find a fun thing to joke about. Thus we do as much as possible in each other's company to keep this belief alive- walking the dogs and grocery shopping together.
That's about it....for now.

I went snow-shoeing today! Being a Miami girl and all, I thought I wouldn't survive for too long in the winter wonderland that is Lassen National Park and I certainly didn't think my little pup, Sophia, would hold out for too long either- but we made it! I must admit that I went in my running shoes which was not the best of ideas. My feet were wet, extremely cold and numb. So, I decided to put on some plastic bags over my socks, and then put on my shoes...very resourceful of me! It worked well too!
This year is progressing well. I've taken up a new diet and weight training program (Body for Life by Bill Phillips). All I can say is that I miss earth balance and chocolate, but I'm very stoked about healthy living. I'm also trying to be a more conscientious consumer and not buy from companies profiting off the oppression of others. Like Silk, the soymilk company, is owned by a dairy company! Uh, yeah no more support from moi. And stupid chocolate that isn't fair trade.

I just wanted to say HI, and that I will be in Florida from Dec. 20-26 in case you care to meet up! At my house I'll be doing a vegan Christmas Eve dinner around 5pm for those interested (this is mostly a note to Kristyn). AND, I'll be in the Gainesville/Orlando area on the 20th and 21st (most ly this is a note to KARA! and Rachel!!!!!!!!!!!!!).
I'm doing very well in California. My house is brimming with occupants: 6 cats- Bertie, Burrito, Celie, Ferno, Magpie, and Panda, 4 dogs- Sophia, Abby and 2 unnamed puppies, and 2 humans. Work is amazing. I spent all day doing a cooking demo for my co-workers- vegan philly cheesesteaks, sweet potato fries, winter squash with peanut sauce AND berry cobbler with soy ice cream and whip topping. Am I the best or what?? I am, I know.
My graduate studies are strange, but overall good. Going to the gym almost every day- I'm getting cycling legs...it's so exciting! Democracy bike, www.democracybike.com, organizes vegan, organic, diy cycling tours through the coasts and valleys of Oregon and I would looooove to go. It really stinks to only have 1 week of vacation time. And then there's Ireland- that would be lovely.
That's all for now.

it's funny to be at an animal rights conference not as an attendee but as a sponsor! i've seen some friends from Florida which is the greatest feeling ever when California seems so empty and unfamiliar sometimes.
but how cool is this??? i went to hollywood! and santa monica! yes. they have lots of gourmet vegan food- mmmmmmmmm.
i really want to start up a hip hop dance troop. maybe sheaymus can be my co-hort. he has the bestest moves ever.

jacob has applied to farm sanctuary. i should be happy, and am to a certain extent- but is this really what he wants to do? we had/have a good, solid relationship but i don't know if its worthy of a cross country move.
he pops into my mind more than i thought he would while i've been here. it'll be great to see him. during my drive through the countryside today, i pictured what our reunion would be like: a total makeout session in the middle of the terminal? tears of joy? the biggest and best hug we've ever shared? i don't know. if anything, this will definitely help him sort out his next move. florida can keep a person down... being surrounded and comforted by the familiar.
california has been one of the best experiences for me thus far. with all the dead grass around, i was unsure if i'd be happy in the middle of nowhere, but i am. i'm hopeful for our and his future, whether it keeps us together or not. he has a long ways to go before he finds his niche in the world (so do i, to be honest). here comes our nightly meditation sessions again. . .

oh my goodness!
life is just life. i'm here. and so are wild turkeys. and so are peregrin falcons, the spirit animal i chose when i was 9 years old in nature camp. the cows still look at me strangely, especially after my jogs through their pasture. i know they're coming to love me...particularly funky-skinned tyler (he has warts). i need more quality time with the goats, sheep and turkeys for sure. and pico too, he's a small rooster that likes the female turkeys. every morning he jumps the chicken fence to hang out with the turkey ladies. ahhh so cute. must get photo cord for computer.
i went to san francisco yesterday!!!! THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. i'm in california! there is cold weather here...you just need to drive three hours to get to it. 71 degrees yesterday----- beautiful!!!!! all vegan restaurants, quality/economical book stores, homemade vegan ice cream shops (i love you maggie mudd!), sea lions!, hills, hot boy cyclists, otsu, the pirate shop, positivity baby.
i plan on more of these mini road trips. it's just hard when no one else has the same day off (hi thursday and friday) and the only people you know in town are your co-workers.
in anycase, i'm becoming an adult literacy tutor at our local library and am super stoked. i also get to help out with the children's programs at the library- how wonderful. and the best part is the summer's theme is animals!!! ahayayaya

Orland, CA.
Hi. It's about 9:30 PM down on the farm. I've been without a car for a week which has been somewhat of nuisance considering I'm a good 30 minutes from civilization (I do not consider Orland civilization). My cats have just enough food for tomorrow morning, so I will be making a glorious trip a-la-bike to town in the 110 degree weather. I'm really not complaining. I'm getting my Vitamin D, some exercise, my mexican coloring, scenic beauty, and general satisfaction from living.
I've been in CA for a total of 18 days. Waking up to cows outside my window and mountains in the background is still a novel concept. The farm girls are good people. Lots of drinking and fun when we get together in our off-time. Most likely moving into a house with Melaney for a whopping total of 6 cats in one residence. That should be fun.
Celie and Burrito have acclimated quite well to country life. Celie is even venturing into the cow pastures (I don't know if I approve of this yet or not). Burrito continues his nightly hauntings (also known as waking mommy up every fucking hour) and Bertie I think is scared of the outdoors, the coyotes in particular.
I've started a new class and haven't been keeping up with it as much I should. I don't have a routine and that may be leading to my downfall. I do jog every morning but I'd like to meditate, lift weights, get schoolwork done, etc before my workday begins.
I absolutely love, love, love the people who come to the farm. The interns are fantastic and the visitors can't be beat. Having people interested in what we do and the stories the animals have to tell is simply the best feeling in the world. I love concerned and caring citizens. As Jamie said today, this isn't just a sanctuary for animals but for people too. I can definitely see myself being here for quite some time. There's lots of room for growth, promotion, etc.
Well I guess that's all for now.

fun fun fun. it was like a miami winter, but it was june june june. i felt dirty wearing the same sweater all week.
jo's grandmother is hillarious. she is part of this plant society and has 200 varieties in her backyard. she swears by only one dept store and chanel. grandpa carves wood for fun. they are named jane and joe (very cute). the whole house is in lime green. ok not really, but the carpets are.
went to the henry ford museum and i felt a little awkward supporting his company considering he's anti-semetic, but he's dead. so i guess nothing financially goes to anti-semetic campaigns, like nazi germany. anyways, ford was a crazy motherf*&!er. he decided to create a village of every historic house he liked. so the webster house, as in webster's dictionary, is there and so are a few slave plantation homes, a windmill....even the Wright Bros. bicycle shop. that was my favorite part!
we went to frankenmuth, a german village in the middle of michigan. so great. they even had veg food.
other than that, there was a lot of shopping and a whole lot of fresh fruits & veggies.
leaving to california in a few days, getting nervous.

i so tired. woke up in the middle of the night after having dreamt i was in nazi austria with jacob, paul, genevieve, everyone & their mother drinking and walking around a grey park with fountains and geese and all of a sudden the fountains turned into bright colors and did some dances and i hopped on one of the jets and got into trouble and stopped the show. yep. there were canoes too. needless to say i couldn't go back to bed so gen and i went for a midnight bike ride and some unsuccessful dumpster diving. i miss random activities like that.
i have a job interview on saturday with farm sanctuary, the only organization that has replied to my application. i could definitely see myself doing this job. exciting. and jamie would be there. adn there's a college town nearby AND IT'S FREAKIN CALIFORNIA. ahahahaha. yes. i may just win (as genoveva would say).
going to tally next weekend for an animal disaster relief training and ohio in june with jo to see the grandparents.
and today is pat's last day with americorps...i wonder what the classroom will be like without her.

i have the worst haircut ever. genevieve said it looks like my mom's cut. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! i am currently wearing a cap but i think this cold wintery spell will be over soon and i don't think i can get away with wearing head coverings in an elementary school when we reprimand our kids for wearing them indoors. oivey. yay for run-on sentences.
in anycase, i'm getting all nervous again about jobs and moving. i'm almost done applying to on-line graduate school. so cheeky.
that's life. jacob and i went to his sister's wedding and his mom said that she hoped i'd catch the bouquet. yeah, my sentiments exactly. but she's making me a quillow! greatest invention ever.
reading la alquemista by coehlo in spanish. go me. it feels great to bring out my language skills again.
that's about it.
